Wreck of the Giannis-D

Wreck of the Giannis-D

Wreck of the Giannis D, a 100-meter-long cargo ship. Launched in Japan by the Kuryshima Dock Company around 1970, the vessel was purchased by the Greek company Dumarc Shipping & Trading Corporation of Piraeus in 1980. Bearing the name Giannis D, it then sailed under the Greek flag. Approximately 14 years later, it left a port in Croatia bound for Yemen, carrying a cargo of timber. It sailed without incident in the Mediterranean, then passed through the Suez Canal. On April 19, 1983, it struck the Sha'ab Abu Nuhas reef in the Strait of Gubal. As soon as the sun rose, the crew abandoned ship. The Giannis D remained afloat for several weeks. During a gust of wind, the boat broke in two and slid to the foot of the reef in water between 23 and 27 meters deep. The wheelhouse gantry rose to within 6 meters of the surface.
